Texas Football: Herman speaks on sudden death of RB Ty Jordan
Former 3-Star Texas football APB commit and Utah freshman running back Ty Jordan tragically passed at the young age of 19 this weekend.
A former Texas football commit in the 2020 recruiting class, that wound up ultimately committing and signing with head coach Kyle Whittingham and the Utah Utes last year, and freshman running back Ty Jordan provided for some of the most tragic news around the college football landscape in recent memory. On the afternoon of Dec. 26, it was announced (confirmed by multiple sources, including ESPN report) that Utah’s star freshman running back and former underrated three-star recruit Jordan passed away tragically over the weekend.
Here’s more on what happened with the tragic passing of the former Longhorns commit and Texas native Jordan this weekend, per the ESPN and official school report.
"The Denton (Texas) Police Department told ESPN that its officers responded to a shooting call at 10:38 p.m. ET Friday. Officers discovered a gunshot victim who had been shot one time. After life-saving measures were applied, the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.“Following a preliminary investigation, we do believe that this was an accidental shooting, where the victim accidentally shot himself,” Denton Police Department public information officer Allison Beckwith told ESPN."
Jordan is a native of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. He hailed out of the West Mesquite High School football program in Mesquite, TX, during the 2020 recruiting cycle.
And the fourth-year Texas head coach Tom Herman released a statement on the passing of Jordan suddenly this weekend. Herman spoke on the personality and gave his thoughts and prayers to his family and the Utah football program.
During a wild 2020 recruiting cycle for the Longhorns, Jordan looked to be one of the more underrated commits at one point in time. But he flipped his commitment to the Utes a bit ahead of the Early Signing Period last year, and wound up making an immediate impact in Salt Lake City this fall.
Jordan would win the PAC-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors after a great run with the Utes this season. In five games played this fall, Jordan registered 597 rushing yards on 83 carries (7.2 yards per carry), six rushing touchdowns, and 11 catches for 126 receiving yards and no touchdown catches.
Moreover, Jordan passed at the way too young age of 19 in what turned out to reportedly be an accident. This is a grave loss to the entire college football world, and carries a past connection with Herman and the Longhorns from the recruiting trail.
