Texas Football: 4 takeaways from dominant Alamo Bowl win over CU
Texas football and head coach Tom Herman got a nice 32-point win over the Colorado Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl on the night of Dec. 29.
Worries about how this extremely shorthanded No. 20 Texas football team would respond in the Alamo Bowl against the Colorado Buffaloes and first-year head coach Karl Dorrell were dashed pretty fast on the night of Dec. 29. Texas and fourth-year head coach Tom Herman were trying to enter the offseason with a good amount of momentum by beating their former Big 12 foe Colorado in the Alamo Bowl.
Herman and the Longhorns came into this game with a record of 6-3 (5-3 Big 12), ending the regular season winning four of their last five games. And their last game resulted in a 69-31 dismantling of the Kansas State Wildcats on the road back on Dec. 5.
Meanwhile, Colorado was headed in a bit of a different direction heading into the Alamo Bowl. Colorado won their first four games of the regular season, but their last resulted in a Dec. 12 loss in the Rumble in the Rockies at the hands of the Utah Utes and head coach Kyle Whittingham. That led the Buffs to sport a record of 4-1 (3-1 PAC-12) heading into this Alamo Bowl showdown.
Texas came out of the gates hot in this game and didn’t really look back. Colorado did try to fight back for a bit in the second quarter, but that ended quickly. Texas still had a 17-10 lead heading into the locker room at halftime, but took a big lead in the second half.
A big rally from a Longhorns offense that was down senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who left with a shoulder injury pretty early on, was a great sign and led this team to victory by more than a 30 point margin.
Here’s a look into four takeaways from the Longhorns Alamo Bowl win over the Buffs on Dec. 29.
