Texas Football: Could Brian Kelly be a consideration for HC in 2021?
A few new names could be coming up if the Texas football program decides to ultimately take on a coaching search during the 2021 offseason.
It is going to be tough for the Texas football program to find a real home run candidate to potentially hire as their next head coach entering the 2021 offseason, if that’s the intention of the administration in the near future. Since Texas athletic director Chris del Conte wasn’t able to win over the likes of the former Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes three-time National Championship winning head coach Urban Meyer earlier in the season, their top candidate went down the drain.
There are other names that the Longhorns could potentially look into with Meyer very likely not their hire, if the administration does decide to ultimately replace current head coach Tom Herman. But most names that are mentioned around media and fan circles haven’t done much to get really anyone excited around the program, at least like Meyer did.
According to a report from Horns247 entering the weekend (paid content), a lot of the minds of the boosters, regents, administration, etc. haven’t changed since Herman ended the 2020 campaign with a 32-point win in the Alamo Bowl over the Colorado Buffaloes back on Dec. 29. Apparently the quality of the opposition wasn’t really up to par to the point where it would make an impact in the administration’s decision as to what to do with Herman this offseason.
Texas administration will reportedly meet once college football bowl season comes to an end to discuss what the fate of Herman should be. The inconsistencies both on the field and on the recruiting trail put him in the place he is now, despite ending this season winning four of the Longhorns last five games.
And one candidate that could pique some interest on the Forty Acres with the Texas head coaching job is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish current head coach Brian Kelly. The former Cincinnati and Central Michigan head coach just led Notre Dame to the program’s second appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Kelly could reportedly be talked into at least hearing the Longhorns out if CDC really opens up the checkbook. Would that be enough to both get Kelly and the fans on the Forty Acres interested in making a move like this to replace Herman?
Texas finished up the 2020 season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12), following their sizable 55-23 win over first-year head coach Karl Dorrell and the Buffs on the night of Dec. 29. Herman looks to still not be in the clear heading into the offseason after the seven win campaign.
