The look of the Texas football program got a massive shift on the morning of Jan. 2, with the news that Tom Herman will be replaced by Steve Sarkisian.

News that was not anticipated to come down this fast, or even at all heading into the 2021 offseason, arrived on the morning of Jan. 2. The Texas football program had the news drop that fourth-year head coach Tom Herman would be replaced by the offensive coordinator of the Alabama Crimson Tide Steve Sarkisian.

Herman and the Longhorns didn’t get the ideal result they wanted heading into the fall. In the midst of a crazy year and a crazy college football season, Herman led the Longhorns to finish up with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) this fall. Texas rounded out the 2020 campaign with a dominant 55-23 win over the Colorado Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl back on Dec. 29.

Multiple sources (including Horns247) are reporting that the Longhorns will replace Herman with Sarkisian heading into the 2021 offseason. Another Nick Saban disciple will try to get their college football coaching career back on track heading into the 2021 offseason, with another blue blood program.

Sarkisian is helping the Crimson Tide in their path to win a College Football Playoff National Championship to round out this season. Alabama took down head coach Brian Kelly and the No. 4 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in their semifinal game on Jan 1., by the convincing final score of 31-14.

He had a few stops in the last five years that led to the rehabilitation of his college football coaching career. Sark was also a head coach with the USC Trojans and Washington Huskies in the late 2000’s and early-to-mid 2010’s. In 2017, Sark wound up joining the Atlanta Falcons as their offensive coordinator. He would be their offensive coordinator for around two years before joining the Alabama staff again as their offensive coordinator.

Meanwhile, Herman will see the door on the Forty Acres, rounding up with a record of 32-18. His best individual season with the Longhorns in four years as head coach came back during the 2018 season. Texas finished up with a record of 10-4, and with a win in the Sugar Bowl over the Georgia Bulldogs, in 2018.

This news is something that will not only shock the Big 12 landscape, but the college football world as a whole. Sark is still taking part with Alabama in one more game before their season officially comes to an end.

The buyout for Herman with the Longhorns will be set reportedly around $24 million. There’s other questions that will be brought about for this staff that was now formerly under Herman’s direction moving forward.
