A sizable contract detail was announced earlier this week for the recently hired Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian.

The recent big time hiring by the Texas football program of the current Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and the reigning Broyles Award winner Steve Sarkisian made waves around the college football landscape since the weekend. On the morning of Jan. 2, both the firing of now former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and the hiring of Sark as his replacement were brought into the national spotlight.

One of the important storylines following up on the Longhorns hiring of Sark as their next head coach was what his contract figures would look like. And Sark certainly got a sizable contract to be the next head coach on the Forty Acres.

According to a report from Chip Brown of Horns 247 (paid content) this week, the contract for Sark will be worth $34.2 million over the course of six years. The deal is reportedly not fully guaranteed, and he will get an annual bump in salary of $200,000.

The starting salary for Sark with the Longhorns sits at $5.2 million. That was a little south of $1 million shy of what Herman’s salary would’ve been if he remained as the Texas head coach for the 2021 season.

If Sark’s contract holds through the end of the six years, then he would be due $6.2 million for the 2026 season. And he was already getting a nice pay day as the Alabama offensive coordinator this season, earning around $2.5 million. That was just north of a $800,000 pay bump from what he got on staff with the Crimson Tide in 2019.

Moreover, the buyout figures for Herman and his staff sat around $25 million. Herman’s buyout was a little north of $15 million itself. This will be a very expensive offseason to shift coaching regimes on the Forty Acres, but hopefully it works out in the end.

Under Herman’s direction, the Longhorns finished up the 2020 season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12), winning five of their last six games. And they officially wrapped up back on Dec. 29, by dominating the Colorado Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl by the final score of 55-23.
