Texas Football: Can Sark get Quinn Ewers back from Ohio St?
What would the 2022 Texas football recruiting class have to do under new head coach Steve Sarkisian to win back the interests of QB Quinn Ewers?
It could be the perfect aligning of the stars for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class heading into the thick of the 2021 offseason. Texas got a huge commitment on the afternoon of Jan. 12 from the highly touted four-star Lewisville 6-foot-2 and 180 pound wide receiver Armani Winfield, as their second prospect in the 2022 recruiting class.
Landing that coveted pledge from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex native Winfield brings newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns up to two blue chip commits in their 2022 class. Texas got a nice boost in their 2022 class after a rough stretch last fall by adding back an initial prospect on the offensive side of the ball.
Not only is Winfield a replacement four-star wide receiver to the Lancaster product and former Texas commit Phaizon Wilson, he is ranked much higher. Winfield is nearly a top 75 ranked 2022 high school prospect in the nation, while Wilson is a ways out of the top 150.
Moreover, maybe the biggest impact that landing a commitment from Winfield could have on the Longhorns 2022 class is the potential opening of the door to get in meaningful contact with the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers again. Texas saw Ewers re-open his recruitment during a detrimental period for their 2022 class back in late October.
It didn’t take much time at all for Ewers to wind up essentially flipping his commitment from Texas to join head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes. But Texas just got a huge commit from a DFW Metroplex product in Winfield that was, at one point, trending to give his pledge to Ohio State.
Could that be enough to win the commitment of Ewers back over to Texas?
Who knows right now.
But it surely looks like the firing of now former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and the hiring of the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and Broyles Award winner Sark is paying dividends out of the gates on the recruiting trail. Sark just led the Crimson Tide offense to put up more than 50 points in a romping of Ohio State in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on the night of Jan. 11.
It’s not surprising that helped to build up some momentum at the skill positions for Texas in their 2022 class.
Ewers currently holds offers from 30 schools, but it’s also not shocking that he hasn’t received any offers since he decommitted from Texas in late October. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Oklahoma Sooners, Penn State Nittany Lions, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.
Moreover, Ewers ranks as the nation’s top overall 2022 high school prospect both in the Top247 and the 247Sports Composite. He is one of very few prospects to ever receive a perfect 1.000 247Sports Composite ranking.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 16 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. They could be contending for the nation’s top spot once again if they managed to get Ewers back in the mix from the Buckeyes.
