Ex Texas football HC Charlie Strong joins Jags as assistant head coach
There are more former coaches from the Texas football program of late that are headed to join the former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators three-time National Championship winning head coach Urban Meyer with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL ranks in 2021. Heading into the weekend, the now former first-year Texas defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash joined the Jacksonville Jaguars staff in his first NFL assistant role with Meyer.
And Ash is not the only prominent former Texas coach/coordinator that has recently joined Meyer’s staff at the NFL level with the Jags. Former Texas head coach Charlie Strong will reportedly also be joining Meyer’s coaching staff with the Jags in 2021.
The role that Strong is taking on with Meyer’s staff in Jacksonville will likely be as a linebackers coach. The last coaching role that Strong held in the college football coaching ranks was under head coach Nick Saban with the Alabama Crimson Tide, as a defensive analyst.
Strong is also a former head coach of the Louisville Cardinals, South Florida Bulls, and as an interim for just one game in the mid-2000’s with the Florida Gators. In particular, he was the Longhorns head coach from 2014-2016, registering a total record of 16-21. He only had one postseason appearance during his three years as the Texas head coach, and never registered a winning season.
The total record that Strong registered as an FBS head coach was 74-53 (.583 winning percentage). His most successful stint in terms of positive results in the win column came during his four years as Louisville’s head coach, where he registered a winning percentage just north of .730.
Moreover, the Jags staff is starting to come together with a lot of connections back to the Longhorns. There are now multiple former Texas coaches/coordinators in the mix, and the Longhorns were the last college program to make a real run at hiring Meyer before the Jags snagged him to be their next head coach.
Strong is surely an interesting hire for the Jags as a likely positional coach on Meyer’s staff. But this looks to be a continued stop in the quest for Strong to rehab his coaching career after tough ends to his stints with USF and Texas as a college head coach.
