Earlier this month, the Texas football program made waves around the college football landscape when they hired the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and the reigning Broyles Award winner Steve Sarkisian as their fourth head coach in the last decade. Texas parted ways with now former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman following the conclusion to the 2020 season, which came abruptly on Jan. 2.

Sark has quickly assembled his coaching staff that can hopefully take this Longhorns football program to the next level in the near future. A few of the more significant hires he’s made to his coaching staff thus far were the special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood, and defensive backs coach Terry Joseph, among others.

The reactions also continue to pour in for the Longhorns concerning the hire of Sark, and the coaching staff around him. It seems like the Longhorns are finding more positive reactions around the Forty Acres, including with the infamous alum Matthew McConaughey.

Earlier in the week, McConaughey joined up with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith to give his reaction on the hiring of Sark. On this matter, McConaughey stated that he feels “good and hopeful” about the hire of Sark.

What else McConaughey mentioned on Texas football

McConaughey also mentioned that Sark is taking on more of an “underdog role” in terms of the mentality on the Forty Acres right now. There is definitely going to be an interesting dynamic that Sark works his way into with the Longhorns this year.

Texas didn’t necessarily have the worst result in the win column during the 2020 season. It was just the inconsistent results on the field and on the recruiting trail that Herman produced in the last few years that led to his firing a few weeks back.

McConaughey himself is usually very vocal on the matters concerning this Longhorns program. And he made his voice known regarding the hiring of Sark, where his reaction seems to be mostly a positive one.

Texas finished up with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) during the 2020 season under Herman’s direction, including wins in five of their last six games. Their last game resulted in a dominant 55-23 win over the Colorado Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl back on Dec. 29.
