1) Concerning recent slumps for Texas basketball

Another Longhorns big man that had a roller coaster ride in terms of both per game stats and overall advanced metrics so far this season is the former elite five-star recruit and freshman power forward Greg Brown. The sole signee in Smart’s 2020 recruiting class, Brown had a lot of pressure on his shoulders coming onto the Forty Acres last offseason.

Nonetheless, Brown has largely cemented his status as a first round pick come the 2021 NBA Draft, and could even go as high as the lottery. Brown proved coming out of Vandegrift High School in the Longhorns backyard in Austin that he is worth the hype. But the consistency is likely to take more time to come around.

Brown has played in 13 of the Longhorns 14 games so far this season (starting in all of them), averaging around 22 minutes on the floor per game. And he’s averaged 11.9 points per game, 8.0 rebounds, 0.1 assists, 0.6 steals, 1.3 blocks, and 2.3 turnovers. Brown shot 42.1 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 69.2 percent from the free-throw line.

That all has amounted to a solid 4.2 box plus/minus rating, .164 win shares per 40 minutes, 1.2 total win shares, 53.2 true shooting percentage, 99 offensive rating/86 defensive rating, and a 20.3 player efficiency rating.

And while Brown has contributed in decent spurts on both ends of the floor in the last few games, he’s also seen his offensive efficiency largely go by the wayside. But given the trend of Brown’s game so far this season, it shouldn’t take too long for him to bounce back.
