On the late afternoon of Feb. 2, newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and running backs coach Stan Drayton saw the great news hit the public eye that the 2022 Texas football recruiting class landed a commitment from an elite in-state running back product. Texas got their second skill position commit in the 2022 class after just turning the calendar to February, and it is certainly a big one.

This latest commitment to the 2022 recruiting class arrived to Sark and the Longhorns from the likes of the highly coveted four-star Klein Cain 5-foot-11 and 205 pound running back Jaydon Blue. This highly touted rusher coming out of Houston, TX, is also the first running back commit in the Longhorns 2022 class.

It was announced on Blue’s Twitter timeline on Feb. 2 that he would be giving his commitment to Texas over offers from more than 30 other schools. This is a much needed break for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail just ahead of National Signing Day 2021.

In The Opening National Combine roughly one year ago, Blue ran a 4.3 second shuttle time and a 7.6 second L Cone drill. He’s a very fast and elusive running back that already has a lot of size and strength on his frame.

Blue can both break tackles often and make defenders miss in the open field. He’s also rapidly improving as a receiver out of the backfield. Developing his game as a blocker out of the backfield is going to be key for him moving forward.

During the 2020 high school football season with Klein Cain, Blue registered a whopping 2,155 rushing yards on 227 attempts, 30 rushing touchdowns, and had just shy of 100 receiving yards on 14 catches. Over the course of the last two years combined, Blue registered more than 45 rushing touchdowns and 3,767 rushing yards.

Texas football lands a key 4-Star RB commit

What Texas is getting out of this commitment from Blue is the nation’s No. 60 2022 high school prospect, No. 4 running back, and No. 11 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 69 high school prospect, No. 4 running back, and No. 13 prospect out of Texas.

Blue wound up committing to Texas, which was one of nearly three dozen offers he held as of the morning of Feb. 2. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, Florida Gators, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, Stanford Cardinal, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.

Texas gets a really nice boost to their running back depth if they’re able to hang onto the commitment of Blue over the long haul and eventually sign him down. They might miss out on the likes of the highly touted four-star Cy-Fair running back LJ Johnson to the rival Aggies, thus landing Blue becomes that much more important.

Sark and the Longhorns also have a blue chip commit at running back in the 2021 class with the underrated four-star Hallettsville product Jonathon Brooks.

Texas is establishing a nice pipeline of talent at the running back position, dating back to the signing of freshman Bijan Robinson in the 2020 class. The 2022 class could be another potent one at the position for this program.

Moreover, the Longhorns are now up to three commits in their building 2022 class. Blue is the highest rated of the three, as he is one of a trio of blue chips. The other two commits in the 2022 class at the moment are four-star Lewisville wide receiver Armani Winfield and four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class is now up to No. 10 in the nation and remains in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the rival Sooners. Landing the commitment from Blue this week could be a very solid building block for the Longhorns 2022 class from here on out.
