Texas Football: 3 appealing transfer portal QB options this offseason
There’s not many options left at the quarterback position in the NCAA Transfer Portal at this point, but I would personally still be an advocate of newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program getting more help here this offseason. Texas did lose a lot of quarterback depth of late, both from their roster last season and on the recruiting trail.
Since the 2020 preseason, the Longhorns and former head coach Tom Herman had lost the likes of former highly coveted blue chip recruit and dual-threat quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson and senior star Sam Ehlinger. And they lost both four-star dual-threat quarterback Jalen Milroe and five-star pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers in their 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes since August.
Losing all four of those quarterbacks from last year’s roster, and on the recruiting trail, hurts for Sark and the Longhorns moving forward. A quick way to replenish any of that lost depth for Texas will be by way of the transfer portal.
Texas lost Jackson to the transfer portal earlier in the offseason, and he eventually landed with head coach Kyle Whittingham and the Utah Utes last month. And Ehlinger wound up declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft, as anticipated, despite the opportunity to come back to the Forty Acres for a fifth year.
During the 2021 offseason, Sark is going to have a major quarterback competition on his hands. He’ll likely be deciding between freshman quarterback Hudson Card and redshirt sophomore Casey Thompson.
But if Sark does want to add more depth to the quarterback room, where could he look in the transfer portal at this point for a quicker fix?
