Texas Football: Key visit expected for elite 5-Star QB Maalik Murphy
The fortunes of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class could really be looking up thanks to the boost on the trail spurred by the hiring of first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. Last month, Texas hired the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and the reigning Broyles Award winner Sark to replace now former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman.
Sark and the Longhorns need to do their best to reverse their fortunes on the recruiting trail for the 2022 class after the 2021 cycle didn’t round out on the best note following National Signing Day last week. Texas finished up with their first signing class ranked outside the top 10 in the nation since the 2017 cycle.
There was a point when the fortunes for the Longhorns 2022 class were not looking great either just a few months ago. When the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers announced his decommitment from Texas, it looked like a reason to panic for the Longhorns.
However, positive news at the quarterback position could be just around the corner for Texas. According to a report from Horns247 on Feb. 9 (paid content), Texas is expecting a visit next week from the elite five-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy.

Sark is reportedly focusing heavily on the recruitment of the California native Murphy of late. It was well over one year ago that Texas sent Murphy his scholarship offer in the first place. He was offered back in May 2019 originally by the Longhorns.
This uber-talented 6-foot-5 and 225 pound signal caller now has more than 30 schools on his lengthy offer sheet. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, UCLA Bruins, Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.
There is even one pick in among the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions in for Murphy to give his commitment to the Longhorns over the rest of the competition.
Moreover, Murphy ranks as the nation’s No. 30 2022 high school prospect, No. 2 pro-style quarterback, and No. 4 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 62 high school prospect, No. 3 pro-style quarterback, and No. 5 prospect out of California.
What a commitment from Murphy could do for the Longhorns 2022 class is really unthinkable, in a good way. Texas is now up to three commits in their 2022 class, and the skill positions look really good at the moment.
The latest commit for the Longhorns came from the highly coveted four-star Klein Cain running back Jaydon Blue earlier this month. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 13 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners.
