The coaching staff that was assembled by the newly hired Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian brings new hope and prominence to the table for this program heading into the thick of the 2021 offseason. And some of the more notable hires that Sark made for his on-field coaching staff so far this offseason includes special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood, and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and the reigning Broyles Award winner Sark assembled a solid coaching staff by all indications so far. His group will still be put to the test in a big way, though, given that the previous coaching staff did better down the stretch last season and still was met with a poor fate.

Sark brought a lot of his staff on the Forty Acres with him from Tuscaloosa. Flood and Banks were two of the more significant assistants on staff under legendary head coach Nick Saban with the Crimson Tide. That could mean special things ahead for the Longhorns both on the field and on the recruiting trail with what looks to be an upgraded staff in the mix this year.

Future of Texas football assistant Jeff Banks

And a piece from Chip Brown of Horns247 (paid content) mentioned one of these highly anticipated new Texas assistant coaches as potential head coaching material in the near future. This piece from Horns247 from Feb. 8 noted Banks as a possible future head coaching candidate around the college football landscape.

The other two names mentioned in this piece were Flood and the first-year linebackers coach and former Montana State Bobcats head coach Jeff Choate. Granted since Flood (with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights before Chris Ash took over) and Choate were already college football head coaches within the last decade, it’s less surprising that their names would appear on a list like this.

Prior to taking this job with the Longhorns, Banks was an assistant and/or special teams coordinator with the likes of the Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies, and UTEP Miners. This will be his first stint on staff with a Big 12 program.

Under the direction of now former fourth-year Texas head coach Tom Herman, this program finished up the 2020 season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12). Sark replaced the now fired Herman in early January as the next Texas head coach, the fourth in the last decade.
