Last weekend, the 2022 Texas football recruiting class got a huge duo of commits to add to the mix, one on each side of the ball. Texas landed commitments from both the elite five-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy and three-star Arlington-Martin inside linebacker Trevell Johnson on the afternoon/evening of Feb. 13.

Newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns landed the commitments from the California native Murphy and Texas native Johnson in a matter of just a few hours for the 2022 recruiting class. Texas is now up to five commits in their rapidly building 2022 class.

What the likes of Sark and new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski are getting out of the commitment from Johnson is a truly underrated inside linebacker that has the skill and build to make an early impact in his first two years or so on the Forty Acres. He ranks as the nation’s No. 522 2022 high school prospect, No. 21 inside linebacker, and No. 66 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 18 inside linebacker and No. 76 prospect out of Texas.

Texas is now up to two commits that can play on the defensive side of the ball. Johnson is the second defensive commit to the Longhorns 2022 class. The first came from the talented four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. As of the commits still currently in the mix for the Longhorns 2022 class, Guilbeau was the first of the bunch.

For Texas to continue to build on this side of the ball in their 2022 class, more commitments could be just around the corner. Here’s a look into three of the prioritized targets that could take center stage on the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns 2022 class now.
