Texas Basketball: 3 reasons Horns can dominate Kansas again
1) Why Texas basketball can dominate KU
Focus on shutting down David McCormack and Ochai Agbaji
Kansas is largely an offense driven by two players this season. The mainstay for this Kansas team in terms of star power this season is the junior 6-foot-5 shooting guard Ochai Agbaji. Noted as one of the more well recognized guards in the Big 12 this season, stopping Agbaji is a usual x-factor for a team like Texas trying to beat Kansas.
Also in six career tries for Agbaji against the Longhorns, he’s only really had a truly productive and efficient outing on one occasion. He registered 24 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and one block, when the Longhorns still managed to top the Jayhawks in an upset back during the 2018-19 campaign. All other outings saw Agbaji not even muster a dozen points in any single meeting with Texas.
The other Jayhawk that the Longhorns need to watch out for in this game is the standout 6-foot-10 and 265 pound junior big man David McCormack. Senior center Jericho Sims and freshman power forward Greg Brown need to come up big for the Texas frontcourt while taking on McCormack.
So far this season for the Jayhawks, McCormack is averaging 13.0 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks. He’s solid on both ends of the floor, and is efficient even with his jump shot. The Texas frontcourt could edge Kansas’ in this game, but they’ll have to put their best foot forward in shutting down McCormack.
At least if Texas can do good work against Agbaji and McCormack on the defensive end of the floor, they stand a great chance to win this game.
