The first commit of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class arrived on the night of Feb. 25, in the form of the elite five-star running back hailing out of El Campo, TX, Rueben Owens. At this point in time, landing the commitment from Owens means that Texas is getting the top ranked prospect out of the state of Texas as their initial prospect in the 2023 class.

This El Campo High School product gives newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns one of the few programs that has a commit in their 2023 class as of the night of March 2. In fact, the Longhorns are now the lone program out of the Big 12 that has a commitment in their 2023 class at this point in time.

Texas and the Texas A&M Aggies are two of the less than 10 programs among the entire FBS that have 2023 commits now too.

What Texas is getting out of the commitment from Owens is an elite foundation to their skill position talent in this group. He ranks as the nation’s No. 26 2023 high school prospect, No. 2 running back, and top overall prospect out of Texas (Top247).

It might be a good while between commitments in this class for the Longhorns. But it is still worth looking ahead to see what could be next for Texas’ 2023 class after landing Owens. He’s certainly a talent that will draw other prospects’ interest to the Forty Acres in the very near future.

With all of this in mind, here’s a look into a few of the names to watch for who could be the next commit in the Longhorns 2023 recruiting class following the commitment of Owens.
