2) Important Texas football portal targets in March

There’s so much linebacker talent available in the transfer portal right now that new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and linebackers coach Jeff Choate need to take advantage soon if they don’t want to miss out. Texas was pretty thin on linebacker depth each of the past two seasons under now former defensive coordinators Todd Orlando and Chris Ash.

With the Longhorns having the likes of juniors DeMarvion Overshown and Juwan Mitchell returning at the linebacker position, they are pretty close to shoring up the depth at this level of the defense. But they’re not quite to the point yet where the fans on the Forty Acres can be sure that they’re going to be solid at linebacker through and through.

Landing a former elite five-star recruit that is in the portal right now like Gaoteote or the former Alabama Crimson Tide senior 6-foot-4 and 250 pound outside linebacker Ben Davis would be huge for this side of the ball. Each would be a big boost for this linebacking corps that lost star junior outside linebacker/edge rusher Joseph Ossai within the last few months.

And the good news for Longhorns fans is that Davis appears to already be firmly on the Longhorns radar at this point of the offseason. He appears to be “expected” to confirm a commitment to Texas in the near future.

Davis had a host of injury issues that have limited him in his college career. He’s only played in bits and pieces of less than 10 games in his college career. But he’s registered seven combined tackles (five solo and two assisted), one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass breakup, in his college career to date.
