There’s a lot of buzz surrounding both the 2022 and 2023 Texas football recruiting class largely thanks to newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff. Texas had a huge run on the recruiting trail after Sark was hired to replace the now former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman back on Jan. 2.

How long will the momentum continue to last on the recruiting trail for Sark and the Longhorns, especially in their building 2023 class?

Texas already has one commitment in their 2023 class, which came from the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens. Where the 2023 class goes from here is the real looming question mark for Sark and his new look coaching staff.

Next steps up for the 2023 Texas football recruiting class

A particular rising elite target on the defensive side of the ball could be coming to the forefront of late for Sark and new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. Talented 6-foot and 185 pound Arlington-Martin cornerback Javien Toviano. This product hailing out of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex had the Longhorns after him for a good while now.

It was actually Herman’s staff, and in particular former defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash and cornerbacks coach Jay Valai, that were the ones to originally target and offer Toviano. But the connection between Sark and the new Texas coaching staff with Toviano appears to be blossoming just fine.

Texas was one of the first schools on Toviano’s offer sheet. He received his scholarship offer from the Longhorns back on Nov. 4, 2020. Texas is now one of 15 schools to send Toviano an offer up to this point.

Some of the other notable schools that have offered Toviano thus far includes the Arkansas Razorbacks, Baylor Bears, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Ole Miss Rebels, Oregon Ducks, SMU Mustangs, and Texas A&M Aggies.

Since Texas was one of the first schools to send Toviano an offer, and they seem to be building a pipeline at Arlington-Martin High School for the past few recruiting cycles, there is bona fide interest with this coveted corner. Toviano reportedly stated that special teams coordinator and recruiting specialist Jeff Banks and defensive backs coach Terry Joseph are his “main guys” (per Horns247 paid content).

That is a good way for Texas to start building a foundation with Toviano to see if they can eventually win over his commitment.

Texas still holds one commit in their 2023 class. And it’s hard to tell when the next could arrive. But for the time being, they hold steady as the lone Big 12 school that has a commit in their 2023 recruiting class.
