Former Texas football DT Poona Ford re-signs with the Seahawks
There’s a lot going on in the NFL right now via the trade and free agent market. And there’s a number of former Texas football players around the NFL landscape at the moment that are either changing teams or re-signing with their previous ones. And one of those Texas Exes that just re-upped with his same team this offseason is the Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle and former steal of an undrafted free agent signing Poona Ford.
The former Longhorn standout and two-time Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year Ford had a productive start to his NFL career with the Seahawks. Thus he was able to work his way back into the defensive line rotation this offseason with former USC Trojans head coach Pete Carroll and the Seahawks.
However, the good work that Ford did for the Seahawks over the course of the last few years earned him a really nice pay day this offseason. He is reportedly getting a contract worth nearly $14 million over the course of two years. The $14 million price tag includes incentives for Ford, and he gets roughly $4.5 million next year.
NFL journey of former Texas football standout Poona Ford
Last season was the most productive for Ford to date in his NFL career. He’s now played in more than 40 regular season games in his career, all coming with the Seahawks, in three seasons since departing from the Forty Acres.
And last year, Ford registered 40 combined tackles (25 solo), eight tackles for loss, nine quarterbacks hits, two sacks, and one forced fumble. That amounted to an approximate value rating of seven, and it allowed Ford to start in every single regular season games for the Seahawks in 2020.
The production from Ford last year proves his value on the open market. And it’s nice to see the Seahawks giving him his due after a stellar 2020 campaign.
For his career in total now, Ford has registered 93 combined tackles (59 solo), 16 tackles for loss, 14 quarterback hits, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one pass breakup. That all amounted to an approximate value rating in his career in the regular season of 15.
