This could be a big weekend on the trail for newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and his building 2022 Texas football recruiting class. Texas could be looking at a few more commitments in the near future for their 2022 class, which has already got a big spark since Sark was originally hired to be the program’s next head coach to replace Tom Herman back on Jan. 2.

According to a report from Horns247 on March 19 (paid content), the Longhorns are expecting a visitor to Austin this weekend that is a big time target of the 2022 recruiting class. While this is a self-imposed and self-guided (for the most part) visit to Austin by all indications, getting the highly touted four-star 6-foot-2 and 200 pound Carthage outside linebacker Kip Lewis.

This is big for the Longhorns since Lewis looks to have a lot of traction with the rival Oklahoma Sooners. Texas would still have a long way to go to catch up with some usual competitors on the recruiting trail, namely Oklahoma and the Texas A&M Aggies, in the race to land a commitment from the in-state product Lewis.

Texas football’s recruitment of Kip Lewis up to this point

Texas did send their scholarship offer to Lewis back on Jan. 21, 2021, so they were right in the middle of the pack among schools on his current offer sheet. The Longhorns are now one of 20 schools that have offered Lewis.

Some of the other notable schools on Lewis’ offer sheet includes Oklahoma, Texas A&M, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Baylor Bears, LSU Tigers, Mizzou Tigers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, SMU Mustangs, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and USC Trojans.

Lewis could be a big second linebacker commit in the Longhorns 2022 class if Sark and his staff can get more traction with him in the near future. Making a big impression (in a positive step) could be a real step in the right direction for this new Texas coaching staff in the eyes of Lewis this weekend.

Moreover, Lewis ranks as the nation’s No. 340 2022 high school prospect, No. 25 outside linebacker, and No. 46 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 29 outside linebacker and No. 43 prospect out of Texas.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Texas now holds six commits in their 2022 class after the March 11 decommitment from four-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart.
