There is a lot of action right now for newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and the 2022 Texas football recruiting class on the trail right now. Texas was one of the hottest programs in the country on the recruiting trail for their 2022 class early this offseason. But some of that momentum slowed of late for Sark and his new staff in the last few weeks.

It felt like Sark and the Longhorns were landing blue chip commits left and right for the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes for the first month or two after he was hired as head coach to replace Tom Herman. Texas is going on a drought for the last few weeks, that feels like a few months, given how much success Sark was getting out of the gates.

However, Texas is definitely staying active on the recruiting trail just ahead of the start of spring ball. Texas starts spring drills on campus on March 23, which is now less than five days away.

And there could be some key markers on the timeline this offseason on the recruiting trail in the near future. That includes key offers getting sent out, and the potential resumption of official visits in the not too distant future.

Next steps now for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class

One prospect that Texas is getting eyes on of late on the recruiting trail that could be a potential flip worth watching for them is the LSU Tigers commit and underrated three-star College Park 6-foot-2 and 170 pound cornerback Marcus Scott II. Since Texas already has a solid foundation built in their 2022 class in the defensive backfield, there’s no need to rush pursuing a prospect like Scott II.

But since the Longhorns haven’t even sent Scott II a scholarship offer yet, sending that out in the near future could make sense. Any chance they want to have in getting some of the interests of Scott II away from LSU will need to happen very soon.

And according to a report from Horns247 on March 19 (paid content), Sark and his staff are staying in contact recently with Scott II and could be sending him an offer soon. Texas could use some length to help fit out the scheme of new defensive coordinator (and former Washington Huskies co-defensive coordinator) Pete Kwiatkowski in the secondary.

This defensive back hailing out of the Houston area (specifically The Woodlands, TX) committed to LSU back on Jan. 20, 2021. But he has received two offers since committing to LSU roughly two months ago, which came from the Mizzou Tigers and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

LSU, Texas Tech, and Mizzou make up three of just five schools that have offered Scott II thus far. The other two schools that have sent out an offer to him are the Houston Cougars and UNLV Rebels. It would be smart of Texas to jump on offering him soon.

Moreover, Scott II ranks as the nation’s No. 422 2022 high school prospect, No. 39 cornerback, and No. 57 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 64 cornerback and No. 91 prospect out of Texas.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas now holds commits from six prospects in their 2022 class, with the highest rated being the elite five-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy.
