There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the potential of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class with the possible official visit season returning this summer in the latter stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Texas could be one of multiple Power Five schools that need to kick things into high gear on the recruiting trail if official visits return later this offseason.

And one key 2022 commit of the Longhorns and newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian to watch during official visit season (if it does happen this summer) is the elite five-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy. But all indications at the moment point to Murphy keeping his pledge to coming to the Forty Acres with this 2022 class.

According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) on March 22, Murphy is only looking to visit one school at this moment. And that one school that the California native Murphy is interested in visiting is Texas. He wants to keep his pledge to the Longhorns and continue to build the relationship with Sark and his new coaching staff.

Importance of Texas football keeping Maalik Murphy

The hurt that was left by the decommitment last year of the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers was healed quite a bit by landing the commitment of Murphy. Ewers wound up flipping his commitment to join head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes, while former Texas head coach Tom Herman was left looking for answers for his 2022 class.

But after the hiring of Sark to replace Herman, which occurred back on Jan. 2, the 2022 Texas class really got a spark. The biggest commit that Sark and the Longhorns landed since he was hired more than two months ago was from Murphy.

Landing Murphy helped to build a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail for the 2022 and 2023 classes, including getting commitments from the likes of El Campo running back Rueben Owens and Lewisville wide receiver Armani Winfield. The only real detriment on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns 2022 class since Sark was first hired as the head coach was losing the commitment of the talented four-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart.

Murphy chose to commit to Texas back on Feb. 13, 2021, over offers from 30 other schools. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State, Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.

Moreover, Murphy ranks as the nation’s No. 34 2022 high school prospect, No. 2 pro-style quarterback, and No. 2 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 63 high school prospect, No. 5 pro-style quarterback, and No. 6 prospect out of California.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. They currently hold six commits in the 2022 class, with Murphy as the highest-rated.
