Texas Football: 4 impactful spring camp absences due to injury
Impactful injuries in spring No. 2: T’Vondre Sweat
Moving along in the trenches to the defensive side of the ball, Texas has some work to do to keep up a solid level of depth at the defensive tackle position. Texas didn’t have much to rely on at the defensive tackle position last fall in the way of proven players outside of redshirt sophomore and former four-star recruit Keondre Coburn.
This offseason, there’s a whole host of newer faces that could rise to the occasion in this position group. There are more obvious names such as freshmen talents like Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton. But you can also dig deeper and find other potential hidden gems for Sark and new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski like junior T’Vondre Sweat and redshirt freshman Sawyer Goram-Welch, among others.
It is unfortunate that a potent defensive lineman that has shown a lot of flashes like Sweat has also undergone so many injury issues during his time on the Forty Acres. Playing time was spurned in each of the last two seasons for Sweat thanks to a host of injury bugs, which held him to play in just bits and pieces of 14 games.
Yet, in the slightly over a dozen games that Sweat saw action in his career to date, he was pretty productive. In his two years playing for Texas, he’s registered 30 career combined tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
Sweat is currently dealing with a shoulder issue, but he should be back for summer workouts for the Longhorns and be ready to go for contact drills by the start of fall camp.
