Just when it looked like newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and linebackers coach Randy Choate would be done adding depth out of the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason, they could dip their toe in one more time. Up to this point of the offseason, Texas football already added the likes of former Notre Dame Fighting Irish edge rusher/outside linebacker Ovie Oghoufo, and LSU Tigers linebacker Ray Thornton.

That list doesn’t even include the likely addition for the Longhorns defense of the former Alabama Crimson Tide graduate transfer linebacker Ben Davis (who hasn’t officially enrolled yet).

Moreover, the next addition on the way for Sark and the Longhorns at this level of the defense could come from another blue blood football program. According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) on March 23, Texas is looking into the former Michigan Wolverines blue chip recruit and senior linebacker Jordan Anthony out of the transfer portal.

While the Horns247 report didn’t confirm this fact for sure, the Longhorns coaching staff could be looking into Anthony as a backup option in case things don’t work out with Davis out of the portal. If Texas were to add Anthony and Davis, this would be an unprecedented amount of additions to one position group out of the portal in a single offseason.

What Texas football could get in transfer LB Jordan Anthony

Anthony put his name in the transfer portal earlier in the offseason. And while it looks like there was some interest from potential suitors that already came his way, he has yet to find a leading landing spot for where he could take his talents next.

It was actually way back in August 2020 that Anthony originally put his name in the transfer portal after missing the entirety of last season for head coach Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines.

Anthony originally committed to Michigan back in 2016, and signed with them as a big part of their 2017 recruiting class. He then held offers from notable schools such as the Oklahoma Sooners, Ohio State Buckeyes, LSU Tigers, etc. before committing to Michigan.

Coming out of IMG Academy during the 2017 cycle, Anthony ranked as the nation’s No. 106 high school prospect, No. 8 outside linebacker, and No. 19 prospect out of Florida (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranked him as the nation’s No. 210 high school prospect, No. 8 outside linebacker, and No. 27 prospect out of Florida.

Moreover, Anthony never got much sustained playing time for Michigan over the course of his three years with the program. Pretty much all of his playing time in game action came in 2018 and 2019. In those two seasons combined he registered 15 combined tackles, one tackle for loss, and one sack, in bits and pieces of seven games played.

Texas is already ramping their offseason up into high gear this week. On March 23, Sark and the Longhorns began spring drills. Although really none of their additions through the transfer portal so far this offseason have arrived on campus at the outset of spring ball.
