Early dream coaching candidates No. 3: Becky Hammon

Turning to the NBA coaching ranks would be something that the Longhorns could definitely do and find success with. But there is always an inherent risk with turning to a rising star in the NBA coaching ranks to hire with a big-time power conference program in college. That’s why Texas would have to go with the best of the best at that level of coaching candidates.

One option that really sticks out, if she was willing to come to the college coaching ranks, is the San Antonio Spurs longtime assistant and associate to the legendary head coach Gregg Popovich, Becky Hammon. The six-time WNBA All-Star selection and longtime New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars guard is one of the big names at the NBA assistant coaching ranks right now.

It only feels like a matter of time before an NBA team somewhere gives Hammon the opportunity to be their next head coach. But maybe the Longhorns can get out in front of that trend and offer Hammon their opening after Smart’s departure.

This would definitely be a new way to flip the trends in multiple sense in the college hoops coaching world if they hired Hammon. But first, she would have to be interested in taking this job opportunity on the Forty Acres.

There’s no doubt that the plethora of valuable NBA coaching experience that Hammon brings to the table could serve her well with a program like Texas. Maybe this could be a nice fit for two parties that could continue to grow.
