Early dream coaching candidates No. 2: Dave Joerger

The former Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Joerger could be another potentially appealing head coaching candidate for the Longhorns. This would definitely be a far-fetched option for the Longhorns and CDC, but one that brings proven coaching experience from the next level to the table.

The current Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach under the direction of well-known head coach Doc Rivers (formerly of the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers) would be a really interesting candidate for the Longhorns. It was a bit surprising that Joerger didn’t land a head coaching gig in the NBA last offseason after the abrupt firing that brought his tenure with the Kings to an end two years ago.

But Joerger was one of the better assistant coaching hirings around the NBA landscape last offseason.

Joerger is a product of Concordia (Minnesota) and Minnesota State-Moorhead from his playing days in college in the 1990s. He doesn’t have any college coaching experience, but he was a longtime head and assistant coach at the G-League level.

That could be transferrable if Joerger was to give it a try at the college hoops ranks.

The Minnesota native Joerger is known for making good use of his rotations top-to-bottom, and playing with very fast pace offenses that stretch the floor similar to most in the modern NBA. Given the improvement that the Longhorns offenses could use in pace compared to Smart’s schemes in recent years, Joerger’s presence would be welcome on the Forty Acres.
