This is a critical time for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class as newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian is ramping his team up for spring ball, which began earlier this week. And with that, there are new opportunities for Sark and his new coaching staff to connect with their top targets of their 2022 class.

There was also a point during this offseason that came about in the last few days for programs to get back to scheduling official visits for later in the summer. After a summer last offseason where the college football recruiting landscape came to a halt in terms of in-person visits in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the scene for official visits looks to be returning this year.

Sark and the Longhorns have a bevy of key targets to try and win over this offseason. But one key prospect that has risen to the forefront of late is the elite five-star North Shore 6-foot-1 and 180 pound cornerback Denver Harris. Texas could really use a boost on the recruiting trail if they are finally able to nab that elusive five-star cornerback prospect.

Keeping the Houston-area product Harris in-state is also key for Sark and new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. Keeping top-tier defensive talent in-state was a problem at times on the recruiting trail for former head coach Tom Herman.

The push for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class to get Denver Harris

Good news arrived entering the weekend from a report on March 26 from Horns247 (paid content), where four-star Texas commit and talented safety Bryan Allen Jr. updated his recruitment. The piece read that Allen Jr. is doing his best to try and get Harris to Austin.

Sark and the Longhorns originally landed the commitment from Allen Jr. back on Feb. 28.

If nothing else, at least getting Harris on an official visit to the Forty Acres this summer would be huge. If Texas was able to get a combination of Harris and Allen Jr. committed in their 2022 class, the potential that would be present in the secondary could be mind-boggling.

Texas already holds commitments from the four-star Aledo safety Allen Jr. and four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau in their 2022 class. Adding Harris could put them in contention among the best 2022 secondary classes in the entire country.

More good news for the Longhorns in pursuit of Harris’ commitment is that it appears they are at the forefront of his recruitment of late.

Texas is now one of 38 schools that has offered Harris as of the morning of March 26. Some other notable schools that offered him thus far are the LSU Tigers (Allen Jr. is also a former LSU commit), Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies, Clemson Tigers, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Tennessee Volunteers, and USC Trojans.

Moreover, Harris ranks as the nation’s No. 6 2022 high school prospect, No. 3 cornerback, and No. 2 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 20 high school prospect, No. 3 cornerback, and No. 5 prospect out of Texas.
