Figuring out what the expectations should be for newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program in 2021 is a hotly contested debate as spring ball rages on the Forty Acres. Texas began spring ball back on March 23, but had to place drills on pause for roughly one week due to various positive COVID-19 tests.

Once Sark and the Longhorns are able to get back into full-contact drills, more people will be able to get to see how the team is looking ahead of next fall. There are a lot of reps that need to go around this offseason to get what will be a new-look roster ready for the 2021 season.

One former Texas head coach that knows a lot about preparing his team the right way for an important season ahead is the current North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown. And Brown definitely had a noteworthy opinion on the matter of expectations for the Longhorns with a new coaching regime in place, and what went wrong within the last decade.

The Tar Heels head coach joined up with the “Pat McAfee Show” on March 29 to discuss his thoughts on the Texas program at this point in time.

What Mack Brown had to say about the Texas football program?

By far the most interesting takeaway for me from Brown’s discussion with McAfee earlier this week was what he had to say about what went wrong with the program potentially from an administrative and booster level of late. Brown essentially thinks that there might be too many voices trying to fight for influence in the Texas program than would be proficient for the greater good of the team on the field.

He feels that a more concentrated sphere of influence and a clear and powerful voice that the head coach holds over the program would lead to more clear success on the field. And it could help identify in a more transparent method what is going wrong with the football program at any point in time.

Maybe this is something that Sark can improve upon based on his time learning under legendary head coach Nick Saban with the Alabama Crimson Tide as their offensive coordinator over the course of the last two years. Sark is not only the former Alabama offensive coordinator and reigning National Champion, but he is also the most recent Broyles Award winner.

Texas finished up the 2020 season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of the now former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman. And the Longhorns wound up parting ways with Herman back on Jan. 2 in favor of hiring Sark as their next head coach.
