A recent rankings update for the 247Sports Composite has shifted the outlook for the 2023 Texas football recruiting class. Texas got their initial commit in their 2023 class by landing a pledge from the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens.

Landing the commitment from Owens in the Longhorns 2023 class was part of the hot streak that newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian found on the recruiting trail after he was hired back on Jan. 2. Sark replaced the now former Texas fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns got a much-awaited spark on the recruiting trail in the following couple of months.

Sark and the Longhorns are the lone Big 12 program at the moment that holds a commit in their 2023 class. And getting the pledge from the in-state product Owens put Texas in a position to contend to have one of the best recruiting classes in the nation for the 2023 cycle. This potential early spark in momentum on the trail could be huge down the road.

Texas could go any number of ways for their 2023 class from here on out. But they’re also doing a great job establishing a real pipeline of talent at the running back position. In their 2022 class, Texas holds a commitment from the talented four-star Klein Cain running back Jaydon Blue.

Future direction of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class

Just after landing the commitment from Owens, the Longhorns are sitting on top of the college football recruiting landscape for their 2023 class. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2023 Texas recruiting class now ranks in the top spot in the nation ahead of the likes of the Florida State Seminoles and Georgia Bulldogs, among others.

Owens is the lone five-star commit that any school owns in their 2023 class as of the night of March 31.

What Texas is getting out of Owens is the nation’s No. 22 2022 high school prospect, No. 2 running back, and No. 3 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 37 high school prospect, No. 2 running back, and No. 3 prospect out of Texas.

It was very recent that Owens got that highly coveted fifth-star in his 247Sports Composite recruiting ranking.

Owens chose to give his commitment to Texas over 20 other schools. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet included the Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Florida State, Georgia, LSU Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Penn State Nittany Lions, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.

Texas could expand their 2023 commit in the near future, as competing classes like those of Florida State and Georgia are up to three a piece in their class for this cycle. But it’s hard to be any level of disappointed with the start of having the top-rated running back prospect out of Texas for this cycle in Owens in the mix out of the gates.
