The first commit in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class was the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens. Texas landed their commitment from Owens back on Feb. 25, 2021. And they were the first Big 12 program to hold a commit in their 2023 class at the time. That still holds true as Texas is one of roughly a dozen FBS schools that have a 2023 commit as of the night of March 31.

Newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian got his first commit in the Longhorns 2023 class late last month from the in-state product Owens to build a really strong foundation with this group. Texas got a huge spark on the recruiting trail in general for both their 2022 and 2023 classes since Sark was hired to replace the now former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman back on Jan. 2.

Texas landed multiple blue chip commits in their 2022 and 2023 classes in the first couple of months after Sark was hired to be the next head coach. Owens could prove to be one of the best of Sark’s initial blue chip commits when it comes time for him to officially take his talents to the next level.

Rankings bump for the 5-Star Texas football commit Rueben Owens

Good news recently dropped for the Longhorns’ first commit in their 2023 class. Ownes earned that highly coveted fifth-star in the 247Sports Composite Rankings early this week. He now ranks as the nation’s No. 22 2022 high school prospect, No. 2 running back, and No. 3 prospect out of Texas in the 247Sports Composite.

And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 37 high school prospect, No. 2 running back, and No. 3 prospect out of Texas.

What this does mean is that Texas holds the highest rated 2023 prospect that is committed somewhere in the entire country at this point. That is a big win for Sark as he can use this to launch more momentum for his 2023 class.

Owens wound up committing to Texas over offers from more than 20 other schools. Some of the other notable schools that offered him include the Auburn Tigers, Baylor Bears, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Penn State Nittany Lions, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2023 Texas recruiting class is now in the top spot in the nation, and still sits as the only class in the Big 12 with any commit for this cycle.
