On the defensive side of the ball, most of the emphasis in spring camp falls on the linebacker position. With Texas losing the likes of junior linebackers Ayodele Adeoye and Juwan Mitchell to the transfer portal already this offseason, they are running very thin on depth at the position. But Texas also lost some key linebackers and defensive backs to the NFL Draft that will cause potential depth problems on this side of the ball come next fall.

Texas lost junior safety and former elite five-star recruit Caden Sterns, star junior linebacker/edge rusher Joseph Ossai, and senior safety Chris Brown, among others, to the NFL Draft this year. That’s a lot of losses to make up for Sark and Kwiatkowski this offseason.

There just are going to have to be some new faces that step up at linebacker and in the secondary for the Longhorns this offseason. One defensive back to watch that could step up in the spotlight and contribute immediately this offseason is the former talented four-star recruit and John Muir High School product Jamier Johnson.

This gifted and potent 6-foot and 175 pound California native cornerback was one of the higher-rated signees in the Longhorns 2021 class. Johnson ranked as the nation’s No. 264 high school prospect, No. 21 cornerback, and No. 22 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite).

Throughout winter workouts and spring camp thus far (granted in a limited workload), Johnson has impressed the coaches and looked good in the exposure he did get.

Johnson is certainly a name to watch in the Longhorns secondary among the incoming freshmen this year. He and fellow four-star cornerback signee Ishmael Ibraheem were huge gets for Sark and the Longhorns in the 2021 class.
