Casey Thompson, QB

Potentially the biggest looming storyline for the Longhorns this offseason has to do with the quarterback battle between redshirt junior Casey Thompson and sophomore Hudson Card. Both former four-star recruits, Thompson and Card could largely determine the fate of the Longhorns season. And it starts with how they each fair in spring ball as far as Sark and his staff are concerned.

The talk of the town for a while on the Forty Acres was the way that Thompson played for Texas in their Alamo Bowl win over the Colorado Buffaloes back on Dec. 29. In that bowl game alone, Thompson completed 8-of-10 passing attempts, for 170 passing yards, a whopping four passing scores, and no picks. He also racked up 17 rushing yards on three tries, with no touchdowns on the ground, in the Alamo Bowl win over Colorado.

For his career in total in two years playing for Texas, Thompson registered 309 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 69.0 completion percentage. And he’s added just over 50 rushing yards and one rushing score.

Thompson and Card still look like they are pretty close in the starting quarterback battle for Sark this offseason. Reps in spring can go a long way to establishing a favorite for who will get the edge in the end. But most of this battle could be decided this fall.

Thompson surely has waited for his due on the Forty Acres. This will be his fourth year playing for Texas, and his patience could pay off very soon.
