Texas football has a long way to go with elite 5-Star S Kamari Wilson
Good news did arrive for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class on the front of top targets of theirs whittling down finalist schools over the weekend. Texas figured out it would be amid the top 12 finalist schools for the elite five-star IMG Academy 6-foot-1 and 195 pound safety Kamari Wilson.
Newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski did well recruiting on both sides of the ball for their 2022 class since landing on the Forty Acres roughly three months ago. Texas did really well recruiting at the safety position in particular, including landing talented four-star Aledo product Bryan Allen Jr.
More safety commits could be on the way in the near future too for the Longhorns 2022 class. But landing the Florida native Williams could really give a huge jolt to the 2022 class if he were to commit at some point this offseason.

On his Twitter timeline on the evening of April 4, Wilson announced his latest round of finalist school cuts. And Texas was one of the dozen schools that were included in his top 12. That left 21 schools cut from contention to land the commitment of Wilson.

The other schools included in the top 12 finalists for Wilson included the Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators, Tennessee Volunteers, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, Texas A&M Aggies, South Florida Bulls, Florida State Seminoles, Auburn Tigers, and Mississippi State Bulldogs.
But it does appear that some of the Florida schools, like the Gators and Hurricanes, are holding an edge in the race to land Wilson. Georgia is also the lone school that has an official visit scheduled for Wilson this summer, which is set for June 4.
Getting an official visit scheduled for Wilson would obviously be big for Texas. In particular, Kwiatkowski and new defensive backs coach Terry Joseph should do all they can to make that happen.
Moreover, of the 21 schools cut from contention to land Wilson, some of the notable ones included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, and USC Trojans.
And Wison ranks as the nation’s No. 25 2022 high school prospect, top overall safety, and No. 5 prospect out of Florida (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 41 high school prospect, No. 2 safety, and No. 8 prospect out of Florida.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Texas now holds commitments from seven prospects in their 2022 class, with the latest coming from three-star North Shore defensive tackle Kristopher Ross.
