There’s a lot of movement on the trail right now for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the 2022 Texas football recruiting class in the midst of spring ball. Texas hit a bit of a dry spell on the recruiting trail of late, outside of a March 23 commitment from underrated three-star North Shore defensive tackle Kristopher Ross.

But that could all change in the very near future. Sark and the Longhorns are starting to see the leading indicators that a few key targets of their 2022 class are leaning toward bringing their talents to the Forty Acres. And one of the latest that is starting to trend in the Longhorns favor to bring his pledge to Austin is the coveted four-star Burges 5-foot-10 and 180 pound running back Tavorus Jones.

This El Paso, TX, native would be a huge addition to the group of skill position commits in the Longhorns 2022 class if he were to wind up giving his pledge to Sark and running backs coach Stan Drayton. The esteemed running backs coach for Texas Drayton is the primary assistant going after Jones for the Longhorns.

What the addition of Tavorus Jones would mean for Texas football?

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions now have two fairly confident expert picks in favoring Jones’s commitment to go to Texas over the rest of the field. And the Rivals FutureCast has all of their analysts and publishers picking his commitment to go to the Longhorns.

Texas was after Jones for a good while now. They sent him an offer back on April 20, 2020, which made them the first school on his now lengthy offer sheet. That has to earn Texas some points in regard to pursuing Jones. And despite the coaching staff turnover this offseason after the hiring of Sark as the new head coach, the same primary recruiter has pursued Jones for nearly a year now.

Keeping Drayton around on the coaching staff could play a big role if Texas does land a commitment from Jones.

Texas is now one of 25 schools on the offer sheet of Jones. Some of the other notable schools that have offered him include the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, Penn State Nittany Lions, Auburn Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Oklahoma State Cowboys, SMU Mustangs, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.

Moreover, Jones ranks as the nation’s No. 153 2022 high school prospect, No. 13 running back, and No. 26 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 154 high school prospect, No. 12 running back, and No. 25 prospect out of Texas.

If Texas does wind up getting Jones to commit to their 2022 class, they would then have two blue chip running backs in the mix. Talented four-star Klein Cain running back Jaydon Blue was one of the early commits for Sark in the Longhorns 2022 class, which came roughly two months ago.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas now has seven commits in their 2022 class, with the highest-rated being the elite five-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy.
