A lot of transition is occurring right now for the Texas football program and newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian in the midst of spring ball. Texas is more than two weeks into spring drills, although they had a setback during the first week amid COVID-19-related issues. And the spring football game is now less than three weeks away.

The Orange-White Game is set to kickoff on April 24 at 1 p.m. CT at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. It will be the first time that the Longhorns take to the field at DKR in some form of game action in front of the Texas faithful since last November.

Moreover, with Texas now a few weeks into spring ball, one of the big looming question marks is how returning players will adapt to potential position changes. One of the more significant position changes that occurred this spring was the possibility of moving former safety and senior Montrell Estell to wide receiver.

Tyler Owens suggesting position change for Texas football

On April 7 on his Twitter timeline, former five-star recruit and junior safety Tyler Owens pitched a potential position switch. He tweeted about the idea of him playing at linebacker alongside fellow former elite safety recruit and converted linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

While Overshown is set to miss spring camp with an injury issue, Owens is still trying to find a solid spot for himself on the depth chart. Owens showed flashes of potential in his two years playing for Texas thus far, but nothing stuck at one position.

Considering that Overshown made the change a couple of years back to go from safety to linebacker, and it worked out well, could mean at least a thought at a position change for Owens. Overshown is set to return as the Longhorns most productive linebacker this fall with junior Juwan Mitchell putting his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier this offseason.

Owens has played in bits and pieces of 10 games in his two years on the Forty Acres thus far. He’s registered 11 combined tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and one pass breakup.
