One thing that is sure to play a big role this offseason for new head coach Chris Beard and the Texas basketball program is the NCAA Transfer Portal. Texas has already lost a plethora of talent to the transfer portal early this offseason. That list of transfer losses for Texas already includes sophomore shooting guard Donovan Williams, junior forward Kamaka Hepa, and senior big man Royce Hamm.

Even before the offseason officially arrived for the Longhorns, they had lost former highly touted four-star recruits Will Baker and Gerald Liddell to the transfer portal.

Long story short, Beard and the Longhorns are likely to look to the transfer portal for help on their own roster this offseason. As the dust settles surrounding the April 1 hire of the former Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Beard in the coming weeks, the process of constructing what this roster will look like for next season will start.

One name to watch in the transfer portal for Beard and the Longhorns this offseason will surely be the former talented four-star recruit and 6-foot-7 and 215 pound sophomore shooting guard/wing Micah Peavy. Back on April 2, the Duncanville, TX, product put his name in the transfer portal to the dismay of many Red Raiders fans.

The initial report that Peavy put his name in the transfer portal came courtesy of Jake Weingarten on Twitter on the morning of April 2. And Weingarten later reported on his Twitter timeline on the morning of April 5 that there are multiple schools already in contact with Peavy to try and nab him out of the portal.

The schools that Peavy has already reportedly heard from are the Texas A&M Aggies, Georgia Bulldogs, Illinois Fighting Illini, Arizona State Sun Devils, Florida Gators, SMU Mustangs, and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Of course, the Longhorns were also in that mix and appear to be an early frontrunner in the race to land a transfer commitment from Peavy.

During his true freshman campaign at Texas Tech, Peavy played in 29 games. And he averaged 5.7 points per game, 3.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.2 blocks. Peavy shot 45.9 percent from the field, missed on three attempts from beyond the arc, and 47.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Texas was one of the more than 15 schools that offered Peavy during the 2020 recruiting cycle out of Duncanville High School. Some of the other notable schools that offered him were the LSU Tigers, Arkansas Razorbacks, Florida, Houston Cougars, Michigan Wolverines, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, Tennessee Volunteers, and Texas A&M.

Moreover, Peavy ranked as the nation’s No. 44 2020 high school prospect, No. 7 small forward, and No. 2 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranked him as the nation’s No. 65 high school prospect, No. 13 small forward, and No. 2 prospect out of Texas.

Texas finished up the 2020-21 season with a record of 19-8 (11-6 Big 12) following an early March Madness exit in the Round of 64. Former sixth-year Texas head coach Shaka Smart left Austin to take the job opening with the Marquette Golden Eagles back on March 26, prompting the April 1 hire of Beard.
