Texas Football: 3 players showing needed improvement in spring camp
Jordan Whittington, WR
The journey up to this point in the college career of the former elite five-star recruit and third-year wide receiver Jordan Whittington was something truly crazy. Whittington was a standout on both sides of the ball for Cuero High School a few years back. And he looked to be able to make immediate contributions for the Longhorns at the wide receiver position.
But due to a lack of depth in the running back room two offseasons ago, former Texas head coach Tom Herman moved Whittington to the backfield. Injuries cost Whittington pretty much all of his true freshman campaign, though, and much of his redshirt freshman season last year too.
If Whittington is able to stay healthy for at least most of 2021, he could be one of the true breakthrough stars to watch in the Big 12 this fall. Whittington’s talent is unmatched by most other skill position players for this team, and it shows when he’s healthy in the lineup.
Whittington will be competing among a group of wideouts that also includes junior Jake Smith, senior Brenden Schooler, redshirt junior Joshua Moore, etc. for reps in the passing game this year. His skill set is unique enough that he will get his touches no matter what, though.
The writing is on the wall that, if healthy, Whittington will be one of the most explosive and productive skill position weapons for the Longhorns in 2021. Whittington is a sleeping giant for this offense.
