Big news could be just around the corner for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class as they are looking back on a key potential retroactive addition to the mix. Newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian and second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman could now be in play to land a commitment from the former Michigan Wolverines four-star Central East wide receiver commit/signee Xavier Worthy.

The 2021 recruiting class was held pretty well together by the Longhorns through National Signing Day, despite the coaching staff turnover in the last few months. Texas hung onto most of their 2021 class through National Signing Day more than two months ago after the Jan. 2 hiring of the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and reigning Broyles Award winner Sark.

On the late morning of April 15, though, news broke of former Michigan commit and Fresno, CA, native Worthy requesting a release from his signed National Letter of Intent. The news came about to the public eye on a post on the Twitter timeline of Worthy on April 15.

What a flip of Xavier Worthy would mean for Texas football?

According to a report from 247Sports on April 15, Worthy has a chance to land with either the Crimson Tide or Longhorns above the rest of the competition if he does in fact leave Michigan. Texas and Alabama do appear to be the set-in-stone frontrunners if he does decide to take his talents elsewhere this offseason.

Worthy had never enrolled early with the Wolverines and signed his LOI with them during the Early Signing Period last December. He originally committed to Michigan back in July 2020. The Crimson Tide had an unofficial visit with Worthy last November, and his scholarship offer from Alabama came back on May 6, 2020.

Although Texas never sent a scholarship offer Worthy’s way during his recruitment out of Central East High school, they are definitely after him now. That does make sense since Sark was one of the primary recruiters after Worthy during his recruitment with the Crimson Tide.

Alabama and Michigan were two of more than 20 schools to send a scholarship offer Worthy’s way. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet were the Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans, and Washington Huskies.

If the Longhorns were to flip the commitment of Worthy from Michigan, they would be getting by far their highest-rated wide receiver signee in the 2021 class. The only blue chip wide receiver commit at the moment in the 2021 class is the four-star Monarch product Jaden Alexis (who ranked outside of the top 300 high school prospects in the nation).

Moreover, Worthy ranks as the nation’s No. 61 2021 high school prospect, No. 8 wide receiver, and No. 4 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 99 high school prospect, No. 13 wide receiver, and No. 8 prospect out of California.

Texas would also be drawing from a talent pool of former Wolverines wide receivers in one way or another for the second straight offseason if they got Worthy to the Forty Acres. Last offseason, Texas landed the former Michigan graduate transfer wide receiver Tarik Black out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranked at No. 16 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas had 21 commits in their 2021 class, with the hi
