One of the more recent high-profile names to pop up in the transfer portal this offseason is the former elite five-star recruit and Kansas Jayhawks freshman 6-foot-5 and 190 pound shooting guard Bryce Thompson. This is a really big chance for Beard to snag a key talent away from head coach Bill Self and the Big 12 rival Jayhawks.

Just like landing a commitment from the former five-star recruit and California native Askew out of the transfer portal this week, Texas could be buying into an NBA-caliber talent in Thompson if they want to bolster the potential of this rotation. While Thompson might be more of a prospect that takes patience from the coaching staff to develop next season, he could bring a new ceiling to the table for the backcourt rotation.

Coming out of Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, OK, Thompson ranked as the nation’s No. 21 2020 high school prospect, No. 4 combo guard, and the top overall prospect out of Oklahoma (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranked him as the nation’s No. 20 high school prospect, No. 4 combo guard, and top overall prospect out of Oklahoma.

Thompson had an up-and-down true freshman campaign with the Jayhawks. In 20 games played in Lawrence last season, Thompson averaged 4.6 points per game, 1.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.2 blocks. And he shot 35.3 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 64.7 percent from the free-throw line.
