Texas Football: Casey Thompson holds the edge in QB battle?
One of the biggest looming storylines for the Texas football program and newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian this offseason has to do with the quarterback battle. Redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson and sophomore Hudson Card are duking it out to figure out who will be the next starter for this new coaching staff.
Sark and the Longhorns looked to have a slight edge as to who they could select as the starting quarterback for the 2021 season. The former four-star dual-threat quarterback recruit Thompson has a lot more experience within the Texas program and had a stellar showing in the Alamo Bowl win over the Colorado Buffaloes back on Dec. 29.
The showing that Thompson had in a dominant Alamo Bowl win to cap last season had to stand for something in this looming quarterback battle this offseason. But what will ultimately win the day is the quarterback that more proficiently fits Sark’s offensive scheme.
Insight into Casey Thompson and the Texas football QB battle
This week in spring ball, senior Texas offensive lineman Denzel Okafor spoke on the matter of where the quarterback battle stands at this point of the offseason. He did mention that Thompson is “getting most of the reps” with the first team in spring camp thus far. But he did also note that Card is still getting some looks in rotation with the first team.
What is becoming clear is that the quarterback battle could carry well into fall camp. It’s rare that a quarterback battle with so much uncertainty and a new look coaching staff like we have going on now on the Forty Acres can take a while to figure out.
Okafor himself is likely to be a key starter along the offensive line for the Longhorns this year. The offensive line itself will have to see some new faces step up into the spotlight, namely with the loss of standout redshirt junior offensive tackle Sam Cosmi to the NFL Draft.
Texas finished up the 2020 season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of former head coach Tom Herman. Sark replaced Herman as the next Texas head coach back on Jan. 2. And the spring football game for the Longhorns is set to kick-off on April 24 at DKR at 1 p.m. CT.
