All eyes among Texas football fans later this month in the 2021 NFL Draft will fall on where their former star senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger lands. Likely to be picked on day two or three of the draft (if it is day three then it will technically be next month on May 1), Ehlinger has a variety of landing spots he could wind up at the next level.

The first day of the draft is set to take place on April 29, with the end of the festivities going through the night of May 1. There should be multiple former Longhorns selected in the 2021 NFL Draft. It is worth watching to see if Texas will snap their drought of former players getting selected in the first round, which now dates back more than five years.

And in a recent interview with 105.3 The Fan last week, Ehlinger discussed his NFL Draft scouting preparation process thus far and a recent team meeting with the Dallas Cowboys. It sounds like Ehlinger has met with most, if not all, of the teams around the NFL that could draft him up to this point. But the meeting with the Cowboys sounds like it stuck out the most.

Ehlinger reportedly stated in that interview last week regarding the draft process thus far that the meeting with the Cowboys “went really well”. And he mentioned that this meeting was essentially a “surreal experience” for him.

Could former Texas football QB Sam Ehlinger land with the Cowboys?

As one of the former Longhorns in this draft class that could be potentially taken off the board in the first two days, Ehlinger is surely a name to watch during the festivities. He is an intriguing draft prospect since he had an established track record of success on the Forty Acres in both the passing and ground games.

If Ehlinger has truly proven to teams at the next level that has next level accuracy on a consistent basis, then he should surely be taken off the draft board by the end of day two. The accuracy discussion tends to be the biggest flaw for Ehlinger’s draft profile at this point in time.

Ehlinger could essentially become a backup to the former Mississippi State Bulldogs star signal caller Dak Prescott in the quarterback room in Dallas if the Cowboys were to draft him. The current backup, at least as it stands ahead of the draft, is fellow former Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert. Ben DiNucci and Cooper Rush could also be vying for that backup quarterback role this year.

Given that, Ehlinger might be a solid option for head coach Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys in this year’s draft. In his four years playing for Texas, he registered nearly 11,500 career passing yards, 94 passing touchdowns, 27 interceptions, more than 2,000 rushing/receiving yards, and 33 touchdowns on the ground.

Ehlinger and the Longhorns finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman. Texas replaced Herman with the ex-Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as the next head coach back on Jan. 2.
