One of the busiest teams in the NCAA Transfer Portal early this offseason is the Texas basketball program, with new head coach Chris Beard getting to work early in his tenure on the Forty Acres. Texas experienced a lot of roster attrition and volatility on the recruiting trail for their 2021 class following the departure of former sixth-year head coach Shaka Smart and the subsequent hiring of the former Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Beard in his place.

In just the past three weeks alone, the Longhorns have lost every single signee that they previously had in their 2021 recruiting class and saw the movement of more than four players in the transfer portal. Texas lost key 2021 signees such as four-star IMG Academy shooting guard Tamar Bates and four-star Brookfield Central power forward David Joplin after the departure of Smart.

But since then, the Longhorns have picked up three additions out of the transfer portal and flipped the commitment of the elite four-star John Paul II small forward Jaylon Tyson from Texas Tech to their 2021 class. The three additions out of the transfer portal included former Kentucky Wildcats freshman guard Devin Askew, Utah Utes junior forward Timmy Allen, and Creighton Blue Jays junior forward Christian Bishop.

Texas basketball HC Chris Beard could still be active in the portal

There’s still a long way to go for the Longhorns this offseason to round out the roster. But Beard is surely off to a good start so far. Texas might not be done hitting the transfer portal, as they’ve lost quite a few players from last year’s team themselves this offseason.

Even Beard’s former team has lost a whole lot of players to the transfer portal early this offseason. Here’s a look at three of the former Texas Tech players coached up by Beard that are still in the transfer portal as of the afternoon of April 20.
