3 former Texas basketball players still trying to find a home in 2021
Greg Brown, PF
One possible former Longhorn that hasn’t put his name in the transfer portal so far this offseason, but is also not particularly likely to return to the Forty Acres next season is the former elite five-star recruit and freshman power forward Greg Brown. The Austin, TX, native and Vandergrift High School product will more than likely put his name in the NBA Draft pool this year.
If Brown does decide that he wants to take his talents to the next level this year, then he could join the likes of Sims, senior guard Matt Coleman, and Jones in this NBA Draft class. But there’s no assuredness that the likes of Coleman, Sims, and Brown will enter the draft.
There is the chance that if a player like Coleman or Sims tries to go into the draft, and then goes undrafted, that they could return to Texas for next season. But the chances that someone like Brown goes undrafted this year is slim to none.
A lot of growth could still be shown in Brown’s game moving forward. But he did show flashes of brilliance during his true freshman campaign last season. In 26 games played with the Longhorns last season, Brown averaged 9.3 points per game, 6.2 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.6 steals, and 1.0 blocks. And he shot 42.0 percent from the field, 33.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 70.8 percent from the free-throw line.
It’s hard to tell what will wind up happening with Brown throughout the rest of the offseason. What is clear is that his mind has yet to be made up, and there is at least still a slight possibility that he is on this Texas team next season.
