A lot of the attention in terms of how Beard and the Longhorns fill out the roster from here on out will fall on the backcourt rotation. Texas does also have a need to fill at the five, but Beard can get more creative with that throughout the remainder of the offseason. Guards might be committing elsewhere faster this offseason, as they’re in higher demand than true centers.

That is why the Longhorns should do all they can to continue down the path of trying to land a commitment from the former Coastal Carolina Chanticleers uber underrated star junior guard DeVante Jones. This 6-foot-1 and 200 pound guard was the Sun Belt Player of the Year last season and is a two-time all-conference team selection.

It appears that competing programs in pursuit of Jones’ commitment, like the Kansas Jayhawks and Michigan Wolverines (among others), are making a huge push to get him in the mix in the very near future. If Texas does want to get Jones in their program, then Beard needs to make him the top priority to round out the month of April.

Jones had an insanely efficient 2020-21 campaign playing for the Chanticleers. He averaged 19.3 points per game, 7.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks. And Jones shot 48.7 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 86.2 percent from the free-throw line.

That all amounted to a sparkling 28.9 player efficiency rating, 6.3 box plus/minus rating, and .280 win shares per 40 minutes.
