It seems like there’s news that comes about each passing day concerning the Texas football program that has an impact on how the roster is being shaped for the upcoming season. And post-spring camp, that trend is no exception for Texas given the latest news. Texas was very busy in the NCAA Transfer Portal since last weekend. They also had a lot of notable headlines on the recruiting trail since the weekend.

Just in the past 72 hours, new head coach Steve Sarkisian saw two players leave the program and multiple new additions by way of the transfer portal and the recruiting trail. The two players that left the program include redshirt sophomore tight end/wide receiver and former four-star recruit Malcolm Epps and redshirt freshman wide receiver and former three-star recruit Kennedy Lewis.

According to a report from Horns247 on April 27, a source confirmed that Lewis was no longer with the team for the spring football game last weekend, and he’s no longer with them altogether. This report also confirmed that, at least as of the night of April 27, Lewis has not put his name in the transfer portal.

What Texas football is losing in Kennedy Lewis?

Texas has lost a good bit of depth in their receiving corps since the start of the offseason. And now being down Lewis and Epps could hurt the receiving corps depth even further if Sark and second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman don’t address this in the near future.

Epps had nearly 300 career receiving yards and a handful of touchdowns in his three years playing for Texas. And while Lewis wasn’t going to bring back as much production for the Longhorns, his ceiling looked to be pretty high. Texas could’ve also used the big body on the outside in their receiving corps that Lewis provides.

The 6-foot-3 and 200 pound Lewis had only registered one catch for 37 yards in his two years with the Longhorns. But he could’ve challenged redshirt freshman wideout and former four-star recruit Troy Omeire for some reps in the offense this year.

Texas had landed a commitment from Lewis in their 2019 recruiting class over offers from 28 other schools. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet were the Baylor Bears, TCU Horned Frogs, Boise State Broncos, Florida Gators, Iowa State Cyclones, Mizzou Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, SMU Mustangs, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Washington Huskies.

Moreover, the Melissa, TX, native Lewis ranked as the nation’s No. 650 2019 high school prospect, No. 83 wide receiver, and No. 79 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranked him as the No. 107 wide receiver and No. 98 prospect out of Texas.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of former head coach Tom Herman. The former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and reigning Broyles Award winner Sark replaced Herman back on Jan. 2 as the next Texas head coach.
