Texas Basketball: 3 transfers the Longhorns could land this week
Sahvir Wheeler, PG
Maybe the most likely transfer portal target now to land on the Forty Acres is the former Georgia Bulldogs All-SEC sophomore point guard and former four-star recruit Sahvir Wheeler. At one point, Wheeler was a top 100 rated recruit that was a huge get for the Dawgs. But now, Wheeler could be looking to take his talents back to his home state of Texas.
The undersized but talented and potent volume scoring guard would provide something that the Longhorns might covet off their bench for next season. While Andrew Jones does provide a nice volume scoring spark, he has changed his game a bit over the course of the past two seasons. He’s become more of a two-way shooting guard/wing than just a volume scoring guard like he was in the past.
However, Wheeler wasn’t the most efficient scoring guard in the last two seasons with the Dawgs. While he did average an impressive 14.0 points per game last season, 3.8 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 1.7 steals, and no blocks. But he also averaged a whopping 4.4 turnovers per game while shooting south of 40 percent from the field and 22.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Wheeler found himself playing in a much bigger role for Georgia last season than the year prior when Minnesota Timberwolves rookie and 2020 first overall draft pick Anthony Edwards was leading the way for the Dawgs. Maybe another newfound role for Wheeler could help him continue to refine his game while keeping that bucket-getting mentality he’s always had.
