Texas Football: Longhorns that could be day two steals in the NFL Draft
Caden Sterns, S
One of the more underrated former Longhorns in this draft class is the former elite five-star recruit and junior safety Caden Sterns. In the months leading up to the start of day one of the draft, it became clear that the former Longhorn Sterns was not going to be taken off the board in the first round. But he could be off the board in the second round without a doubt.
More than likely, Sterns will fall off the board on day two in the third round. That’s where most projections have him falling in this draft class. Sterns has a proven resume from his time on the Forty Acres and an incredibly high ceiling at the next level.
In three years playing for Texas, Sterns registered 173 combined tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, five interceptions, and eight pass breakups. Sterns did a lot to round out his game in his last two years of his college career. But Sterns does have to work on the missed tackles and occasional lapses in deep pass coverage assignments.
Sterns did have more than 30 missed tackles and more than 230 yards after the catch in his time at Texas. But he did also have five passing touchdowns allowed, roughly a 60 reception percentage in pass coverage assignments, five interceptions, and eight pass breakups. Those aren’t bad numbers all-around in pass coverage for this potent safety.
