A deal that is big for the former Texas football junior wide receiver and undrafted free agent Brennan Eagles arrived in the hours following the end of round seven of the 2021 NFL Draft. Eagles reportedly signed a deal with the Dallas Cowboys to play in the NFC East as an undrafted free agent.

The Cowboys had a lot of movement this week and weekend in the draft festivities. But the Cowboys weren’t one of the five teams around the NFL that picked up a former Longhorn in the actual seven rounds of the 2021 draft. They did, however, get a former Longhorn in this draft class picked up via the undrafted free agent market.

It all started for the Cowboys in the 2021 draft with the selection of the star former Penn State Nittany Lions All-American linebacker Micah Parsons in the first round. And then they had a few other highlighting selections in this draft including cornerback Kelvin Joseph, edge rusher Chauncey Gholston, and linebacker Jabril Cox.

Eagles was one of the more surprising early declarations for the NFL Draft among former Longhorns. He had a decent junior campaign but looked to still have a good way left to go before his game was ready to be taken to the next level.

A lot of thoughts were similar to the Eagles early declaration for the draft that Longhorns fans had regarding fellow former Texas wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey a few years back.

However, this could still be a good opportunity for Eagles at the next level. The Cowboys have an electric offense led by the likes of quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott. Eagles will be joining a receiving corps that also includes Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb, among others.

But Eagles will have to fight for a spot on the team’s roster heading into Training Camp and the preseason. It won’t be easy for him to get that far this offseason with the Cowboys since they do have a pretty deep receiving corps at the moment.

In three years playing for Texas, Eagles registered 61 catches for 1,026 receiving yards (16.8 yards per catch), and 11 touchdown catches. He was set to be one of the most productive returning wideouts for the Longhorns this year if he returned to the Forty Acres in 2021.

Some of the significant Texas Exes picked up in the 2021 NFL Draft were offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi to the Washington Football Team in the second round, edge rusher Joseph Ossai to the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round, and quarterback Sam Ehlinger to the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round.
