A few notable former Texas football players went through the festivities through the weekend for the 2021 NFL Draft without hearing their name called. And a few of those Texas Exes didn’t actually finish out their college career on the Forty Acres. Maybe the most notable of those was the former Texas and SMU Mustangs star quarterback Shane Buechele.

It was a bit surprising to not see a quarterback with an underrated amount of mobility and a strong proven arm like Buechele go undrafted. With the quarterback depth in this draft class largely thinning out in the later rounds, it looked like Buechele could be a good find for one lucky NFL team near the end of day three.

Instead, Buechele will get a tremendous opportunity to develop his game with potentially the best quarterback in the NFL in the modern-day. Buechele signed as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the festivities of day three of the draft on May 1 with the defending AFC Champion and 2019-20 Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Getting an opportunity to play for big-time head coach Andy Reid in this legendary Chiefs quarterback room could be exactly the path that Buechele needs at the next level. If it means making the Chiefs roster this year, going undrafted wasn’t the worst thing for the former Longhorns quarterback and talented four-star recruit.

The Chiefs got a decent haul in this draft class considering their first pick didn’t come until later on in the second round. And getting an undrafted free agent class that they signed that is highlighted by Buechele is even better.

Buechele was one of two Texas Ex quarterbacks that were picked up in the NFL this weekend. The Indianapolis Colts drafted former star senior Longhorns signal caller Sam Ehlinger with the 217th overall pick in the sixth round.

Moreover, Buechele himself will get to join the former Texas Tech Red Raiders star quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the Chiefs at the next level. There might not be much better to learn and develop under than a quarterback like Mahomes who has truly revolutionized the game.

And Reid is the one that is largely the architect of this ultra-high powered and new age Chiefs offense that took the NFL by storm in the last couple of years. Mahomes’ raw talent and escapability should get a lot of the credit for the execution of this offense too.

Mahomes’ talent level allowed the Chiefs offense to thrive, with a solid supporting cast that also features the likes of wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce, and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Between his five years playing for Texas and SMU, Buechele registered a 63.1 completion percentage, 11,660 passing yards, 87 passing touchdowns, 32 interceptions, 7.9 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 142.9 passer efficiency rating. He added just under 500 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground in his college career too.

Mahomes and the Chiefs now sport a quarterback room that also features Buechele, former Michigan Wolverine and veteran Chad Henne, and former Ole Miss Rebels dual-threat Jordan Ta’amu. Buechele is part of a potent group, and it will be interesting to watch and see if he can make the roster through Training Camp and the preseason.
