Texas Football: 5 biggest NFL Draft busts ever among former Longhorns
Vince Young, QB
The vast expectations that the former Heisman Trophy finalist and multi-year All-American selection Vince Young came out of the Texas program with never translated permanently in the NFL. There were flashes of brilliance from VY, but they tended to fizzle out over short periods of time. Hence why Vince was essentially done in the NFL after 2011.
Coming off the legendary performance where VY led the Longhorns to defeat the USC Trojans in the 2006 Rose Bowl to win the BCS National Championship, the Tennessee Titans selected him third overall in the first round of the 2006 draft. He had just as much hype coming out of college as other top picks in that draft class, including running back Reggie Bush and defensive end Mario Williams.
In 2006, VY looked like he could be taking the NFL by storm. He was the 2006 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl selection. He would also be a Pro Bowl selection in 2009, but it was a wild ride between those two seasons. And following that 2009 Pro Bowl selection, Young would never reach that level of success again in the NFL.
A career record as a starter of 31-19 wasn’t too bad for VY. But his career production for the rest of his stat categories wasn’t too great. He registered just over 8,900 career passing yards, 46 passing touchdowns, 51 interceptions, just under 1,500 rushing yards, and a dozen rushing scores.
